Laboratory testing is one of the most important tools in modern medicine. Lab results help healthcare providers diagnose infections, monitor chronic conditions, screen for diseases, and make informed treatment decisions. Traditionally, getting lab work done required either a visit to your primary care doctor (who would then send the order to an external laboratory) or a trip to a hospital lab — both of which involve scheduling, waiting, and often returning days later for results. Urgent care clinics have fundamentally changed this experience by offering on-site laboratory testing with rapid results and no appointment required.
At Palm Urgent Care, all four of our San Diego County locations are equipped with on-site laboratory capabilities, staffed by trained medical professionals who perform testing during your visit. For many common tests, results are available in as little as 15 to 20 minutes.
Rapid Point-of-Care Tests
Point-of-care testing (POCT) refers to diagnostic tests performed at the time and place of patient care, with results available during the same visit. The CDC's CLIA-waived testing program enables urgent care clinics to perform a range of FDA-approved rapid tests that deliver reliable results in minutes. At Palm Urgent Care, our rapid testing menu includes:
- COVID-19 rapid antigen test — detects active SARS-CoV-2 infection. Results in approximately 15 minutes. PCR testing also available with results in 24 to 48 hours for higher sensitivity.
- Influenza A and B rapid test — identifies whether your symptoms are caused by the flu virus, enabling your provider to prescribe antiviral medication (such as oseltamivir/Tamiflu) if appropriate. Results in 15 minutes.
- Rapid strep test — detects Group A Streptococcus bacteria, the cause of strep throat. A positive result allows your provider to prescribe antibiotics immediately, reducing the duration of illness and the risk of complications. Results in 10 to 15 minutes.
- RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus) test — particularly important for infants, young children, and elderly patients. Results in approximately 15 minutes.
- Urinalysis — a dipstick analysis of urine that screens for urinary tract infections, kidney problems, diabetes, and other conditions. Results available within minutes.
- Pregnancy test — a urine-based human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) test that confirms pregnancy. Results in approximately 5 minutes.
- Blood glucose testing — a fingerstick blood test to measure current blood sugar levels. Results immediate. Important for patients with diabetes or suspected hyperglycemia or hypoglycemia.
Comprehensive Blood Work
In addition to rapid point-of-care tests, Palm Urgent Care offers a full range of laboratory blood tests that are processed by our partner reference laboratory. Blood samples are drawn on-site during your visit, and results are typically available within 24 to 48 hours. Your provider will contact you with results and any necessary follow-up instructions. Common blood tests we offer include:
- Complete Blood Count (CBC) — measures red blood cells, white blood cells, hemoglobin, and platelets. Used to screen for infections, anemia, immune disorders, and blood cancers.
- Comprehensive Metabolic Panel (CMP) — evaluates kidney function, liver function, electrolyte balance, and blood sugar levels. A foundational test for overall health assessment.
- Lipid Panel — measures total cholesterol, LDL (bad cholesterol), HDL (good cholesterol), and triglycerides. Essential for cardiovascular risk assessment.
- Hemoglobin A1C — reflects average blood sugar levels over the past two to three months. The primary test for diagnosing and monitoring diabetes and prediabetes. The American Diabetes Association recommends A1C testing at least twice per year for diabetic patients.
- Thyroid Function Tests (TSH, T3, T4) — evaluate thyroid gland function. Used to diagnose hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, and other thyroid disorders.
- Liver Function Tests (ALT, AST, ALP, bilirubin) — assess liver health and detect liver disease, hepatitis, or medication-related liver damage.
- Kidney Function Tests (BUN, creatinine, GFR) — evaluate how well the kidneys are filtering waste from the blood.
STD and STI Screening
Sexually transmitted infections are among the most common infectious diseases in the United States. The CDC reports that approximately 26 million new STI cases occur annually in the United States. Early detection through screening is critical for effective treatment and preventing transmission to partners. Palm Urgent Care offers confidential STD screening for the following infections:
- Chlamydia and gonorrhea — urine-based nucleic acid amplification test (NAAT)
- Syphilis — blood test (RPR or VDRL with confirmatory treponemal test)
- HIV — blood test (4th generation antigen/antibody test)
- Hepatitis B and C — blood test
- Herpes simplex virus (HSV) — blood test or lesion swab
All STD testing at Palm Urgent Care is handled with strict confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA privacy regulations and California state law. Results are shared only with the patient and the ordering provider.
Drug Testing
Palm Urgent Care provides drug testing for a variety of purposes, including pre-employment screening, DOT (Department of Transportation) compliance, court-ordered testing, return-to-duty testing, and personal drug testing. We offer standard 5-panel, 10-panel, and expanded drug screens using urine-based testing. Chain-of-custody procedures are followed for all employment-related and legal drug tests to ensure the integrity and admissibility of results.
